Chapter Ten

Shaina walked out of the main office at Moose Hill Meadows with paperwork firmly in her grip. She blinked down at it several times, hardly believing that tomorrow, she would join the workforce at this assisted living facility as a residential aide. The interviewer, a woman by the name of Debbie McGovern, had been pleased that Shaina had some nursing classes under her belt so she’d skipped right over the custodial and receptionist jobs and went right to patient care.

“Many of our residents—especially in the new part of our facility—need assistance with day-to-day tasks, not necessarily medical things, but preparing food, getting dressed, those types of things. You’ll be doing that along with planning some mental stimulation activities with other aides for our residents. Does that sound like something you’d like to do, Shaina?” Debbie had asked.

“Yes, definitely.” It sounded exactly like something she’d love to do. It had been hard to contain her excitement over how well this was all turning out. She’d wished Marco was there with her.

But she could go find him now.

Making a left out of the main office building, she walked to Jim’s place and rang the doorbell. Three come-ins sounded from inside so she turned the knob and opened the door. Marco, his dad, and Elizabeth stared at her with expectant faces, a Scrabble board littered with tiles on the coffee table between them.

“Well?” Jim finally asked as they gaped at her.

“Meet the newest residential aide at Moose Hill Meadows.” She wiggled her paperwork as Marco shot up from his recliner and rushed over to her.

In the next second, she found herself in his arms and spinning around with him. She felt as if she were flying and she didn’t mind the sensation one bit.

“Congratulations!” Marco whooped while Jim and Elizabeth gave her standing ovations. When Marco set her back on her feet, he whispered, “I knew you’d dazzle them.”

“Come sit.” Elizabeth dragged over a rocking chair that had been in the corner of the living room. She set it in front of the TV which wasn’t on anyway. “Tell us everything.”

Shaina eased into the seat and rested her paperwork on her lap, not wanting it out of her sight for fear the job would disintegrate and blow away on the breeze if she wasn’t careful.

“There isn’t much to tell. As soon as Debbie found out I had taken some nursing classes, she thought I was great.”

“You are great.” Marco winked as he straightened some of the tiles on the Scrabble board.

“I feel good about this job. I’ve had other interviews, but not for anything remotely related to my cobbled-together life plan. This feels like a step in the right direction.”

“It is,” Jim said. “You’re on your way now, Shaina. You’d better make time to stop by and see me.”

“See us,” Elizabeth added. “I want you to visit me too.”

“You’ll be with me, Elizabeth,” Jim said.

“Not all the time.”

“Says who? You’ve lived here a few weeks and let’s total the amount of time
